About Mappleton Village
Mappleton in Derbyshire, sometimes spelt as Mapleton, is a charming and secluded brick built village in the dove valley and has attractive views. Continual generations must have looked over the serenity of the unchanging scene and felt at peace. A one arch bridge spans the river dove to carry the road to Okeover Hall, an early 18th century mansion of brick and stone with a distinquished 20th century wing by Marshall Sisson, set in an extensive deer park. At the main entrance is a fine wrought iron bulustrade with magnificent entrance gates-the work of Robert Bakewell who also made the sanctuary gate at Derby Cathedral.
The village has a charming little church called the Parish Church of St Mary. It is 18th century and is crowned with an octagonal dome.
The one pub, called the Okeover Arms was once the Okeover temperance hotel and part of the Okeover estate. It was licenced in 1964.
The village also has some interesting almshouses which date back to 1727, a manor house overlooking the water meadows of thr river dove and nearby is Callow Hall, a splendid Victorian country house and restaurant set in 44 acres of picturesque countryside overlooking bently brook and the Dove vale.
A post office cum tearooms advertises cream teas.
